12 Days Hiking & Big Game Safari

This tour will take you to Kibale Forest National Park that boasts a high concentration of 13 primate species, home to over 370 Gorillas: accommodating almost half of the World’s population of Mountain Gorillas. 

Itenerary

Day 1: Kampala – Mt. Rwenzori National Park (Travel time: approx. +4hrs)

An early rise today. Together with your guide, you will transfer in a private vehicle South-West to Mbarara. You will stop over at the Ugandan Equator, followed by a visit to Craft Village and Igongo Cultural Centre. 

Post-lunch, you will proceed for a museum tour providing insight into the culture of Western Ugandans, then make your way to Mt. Rwenzori National Park. 

Dine at budget end facility lodge and relax as you prepare for a thrilling hiking experience the following day. Meal plan (Dinner) 

Day 2: Mt. Rwenzori Hike – 1,667 Meters Climbing to 2,596 Meters (Climbing Time: approx. +5hrs)

Trekkers start at 1,450 Meters, heading towards Sine Hut, a height gain of 1,146 Meters that boasts the Enock’s Falls set in livid green vegetation and hanging vine – a further 200 Meters. The bamboo zone below, chances of spotting Blue Monkeys and the distinct variety of bird species only add to its serenity! 

Wooden huts set between tall forests on a narrow ridge, offer a stunning view of the Afro Montane Forest. 

For those willing, you may proceed to Kalalama Camp at 3,134 Meters and enjoy the spectacular views and climb your way up to Mutinda Lookout at 3,975 Meters.

Day 3: Mt. Rwenzori Hike 2,596 Meters ascending to 3,925 Meters (Climbing Time: approx. +4hrs)

Begin trekking at approx. 8.30 AM and head to the Bamboo-Mimulopsis zone, a steep climb. The ambience and forest provide the perfect uphill climb of 1.8 KM to Kalalama Camp where you can take rest before heading on to Mutinda Camp. 

In the afternoon you may wish to ascend to Mutinda lookout: approx. a 1-2hr climb up and a 1hr climb down). 

The views are bewildering as you stand on moss covered rocks at 3,925 meters with views across the Rwenzori Mountains and down to Kasese town and Lake George. 

For those that will be climbing Margherita Peak, Mutinda is an excellent way to acclimatize and reduce the risk of high-altitude sickness.

Day 4: Mt. Rwenzori Hike 3,925 Meters Climb to 4,100 Meters (Climbing Time: approx. +4hrs)

After crossing Mutinda Valley, ascend steeply to the Namusangi Valley – 3,840 meters, boasting sheer waterfalls as the trail climbs steadily to Bugata Camp at 4,100 meters. 

Overnight at Bugata Camp or similar. Meal plan (Dinner) 

Day 5: Mt. Rwenzori Hike 4,100 Meters climbing to 4,450 Meters (Climbing Time: approx. +5hrs)

Trek to Hunwick’s Camp via Bamwanjara Pass. 

As you leave Bugata Camp you pass an uphill ridge then descend slightly before ascending to Bamwanjara Pass at 4,450 meters where we have an available hut should the weather fail. 

On a cloudless day, one can get an excellent view of the three main peaks. 

The trail passes down the valley and around the edge of some bogs and thick ever green vegetation, giant groundsel, and lobelia. 

This is possibly the best place in Rwenzori to observe the Malachite Sunbird. 

Further, there is a slight steep before a steady climb up and over a ridge to Hunwick’s Camp boasting spectacular views of Mt. Stanley, Mt. Baker, Weismanns Peak and McConnell’s Prong.

Day 6: Mt. Rwenzori hike and descend -4,450 meters climbing to 4,485 meters (Climbing Time: approx. +7hrs)

From Hunwick’s, descend across the valley floor to Lake Kitandara. Climb up Scott Eliot’s pass, then up the ridge to Margherita Camp – 4,485 meters. 

This is the very spot where the Duke of Abruzzo camped in 1906. 

Overnight at Margherita Camp or similar. Meal plan (Dinner) 

Day 7: Mt. Rwenzori hike descending 4,485 meters to 3,874 meters (Descending time: approx. +4hrs)

Wake at around 2AM for an early breakfast before heading off to climb Mt Stanley. 

After ascending the peak at 5,109 meters, you then pass directly down to Hunwick’s Camp at 3,874 metres.

Day 8: Mt. Rwenzori hike descending (approx. +5hrs)

From Hunwick’s Camp we start the day by climbing up a ridge towards McConnell’s Prong offering the best views of Scott Elliot Pass, before reaching Oliver’s Pass at 4,505 metres. 

After crossing the confluence, the trail meanders down the valley to Kiharo Camp. 

Overnight at Kiharo Camp or similar. Meal Plan (Dinner)

Day 9: Mt. Rwenzori hike descending (approx. +8hrs)

Kiharo Camp to the park gate (12.2KM) and another (2.8KM) down to Trekkers Hostel – approx. 5-8 hrs

Day 10: Mt. Rwenzori National Park – Queen Elizabeth National Park (approx. +2hrs)

Post breakfast, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park – Uganda’s most popular tourist destination. 

Enjoy a scrumptious linch and proceed to the famous Bat Caves at Maramagambo Forest enjoying a guided nature walk. 

Overnight at budget facility lodge. Meal plan (Dinner) 

Day 11: Queen Elizabeth National Park (Game Drive, Boat Cruise)

Post an early morning breakfast, head for a gave drive at the Kasenyi area. 

Return for hot lunch and thereafter enjoy a 2-hour boat ride along the Kazinga channel; an oasis for a distinct variety of species that inhibit the park. The perfect boat ride boasts the chance to witness hundreds of hippos, buffaloes, and Elephants lingering on the shoreline.

Day 12: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Kampala (approx. +7hrs)

Post breakfast, check out and head back to the capital – Kampala, with a stop over in Mbarara for lunch. 

You will be dropped to your final destination if you are staying on in Kampala or Entebbe International Airport.
